Railroad real estate records, 1917-1989 1976-1985.

Record group RG 92-157 contains correspondence, quit claim deeds, purchase agreements, deeds to land, appraisal reports with color print photographs, court proceedings and maps. These records document the state taking over portions of commercial railroads that were no longer economically viable. The state attempted to keep passenger and freight services operational but met with little success. The railroad companies involved are the Ann Arbor, the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O), Consolidated Rail Corporation (ConRail), the Escanaba-Lake Superior, and Penn Central. The bulk of the material dates from 1976 to 1985. The Ann Arbor Railroad's right of way maps are the only documents that date from 1917 to 1946.
